Patient Resources

Hawaiʻi Residents Planning to Travel Overseas

Travelers need to be aware of the health risks unique to their destination.

Some countries have problems maintaining a sanitary water supply. Other countries have diseases that Americans may not normally be exposed to. Plan ahead to prevent health problems before they occur so you can have a fun and safe trip.

How to Prepare for Your Trip

  • Educate yourself about the health risks in the country you are visiting.
Your travel medicine doctor will have educational material that will prepare you for your trip and your destination.
  • Immunize yourself for the diseases found in that country.
Get advice four to six weeks before you leave on your trip to allow enough time for immunization. The process may take a few weeks, so it is important to allow your body time to adjust before you travel.

Your travel medicine doctor will have access to all the current diseases and outbreaks in various areas of the world. They can give you advice accordingly.
  • Have fun while visiting your destination, but be cautious.
Check with your Personal Care Physician (PCP) before traveling if you have health problems.

In the event of an emergency while traveling, we recommend that you carry a note for every member of your traveling party stating:
    • Any significant medical condition.
    • All current medications being taken.
    • Allergies.
    • The name and phone number of an emergency contact person.
    • The name and phone number of your treating physician.
  • Carry sufficient quantities of your prescription medication and a first aid kit.
Be sure you have enough prescription medication for your trip. Not all countries allow all prescription medications so check with your travel medicine doctor about what you can bring to your destination.

Your first aid kit should include over-the-counter medication such as Aspirin or Tylenol, sun block, antihistamine, antibiotic ointment, Band-Aids, anti-diarrhea medication and calamine lotion.
